HAVERHILL - Victor (Pete) DiBartolomeo, 91, of Haverhill passed away peacefully on December 25, 2020.
Born Vittorio Guglielmo DiBartolomeo on February 27, 1929, Victor had nine siblings and was the last surviving child of Carmine and Anatolia (DiMattia) DiBartolomeo.
Surviving family members include his beloved wife of 67 years Claire (Cadorette) DiBartolomeo; daughter Gina of Haverhill; two sons Mark of Shrewsbury and Dana of Maine; several grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Victor was educated in the Haverhill School system and worked as a celluloid cutter for Haverhill Shoe and Leather Co. before entering the U.S. Army in 1951 to serve in the Korean War. As a staff sergeant, he spent two years as a combat construction specialist with the 70th Engineer Combat Battalion and was stationed in Austria. Nearly 50 years later, he had the good fortune to reunite with many of his army buddies and maintained those friendships throughout his remaining years.
After his military service, he spent his life as a self-employed carpenter, working in homes and businesses throughout the city until his retirement in 1994. In the ensuing years, he was a familiar figure on his daily walks along River Street, accompanied by his faithful companion, Amanda, a rescue yellow lab who blessed his life for nearly 17 years. With a distinctive voice, commanding presence and uncanny ability to look much younger than his years, he was a devoted husband and father and a loyal friend to many, always ready to lend a hand to those in need. He will be deeply missed.
Due to the pandemic, a private funeral service was held for the immediate family and burial with U.S. Army Honors took place in St. Patrick Cemetery, Haverhill, where he will join his parents, brothers, sister and lifelong friends. Celebration of Victor’s life is planned for early 2021. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the MSPCA-Angell (Boston) or Boston Children’s Hospital.
