HAVERHILL - Norma Louise (Spurling) Chambers, 79, was called home to be with Jesus on February 5, 2025, at Hannah Duston Healthcare Center, surrounded by her loving family. Although Alzheimer's disease made the final years of Norma's life difficult, her spirit remained strong until the end. She was the beloved wife of the late Kenneth J. Chambers, with whom she shared 56 loving years of marriage until his passing in 2019.
Born in Haverhill on July 31, 1945, Norma was a daughter of the late Forrest and Arline (Taylor) Spurling. She attended Haverhill High School and later earned her G.E.D. from Northern Essex Community College, a feat she was extremely proud of. Norma dedicated her life to nurturing and caring for her family, finding fulfillment as a devoted homemaker.
Above all, Norma had a deep love for Jesus. She found joy in attending West Church, Bible studies, crocheting, and solving word searches. Her love for children was evident when she proudly spoke of her son, “Ricky” and her grandchildren, Cameron and Saige, as well as many children she cared for over the years as a babysitter. She also had a heart for sharing her faith, often bringing children to Vacation Bible School. Norma enjoyed taking long rides up north to Hart’s Turkey Farm with her husband, Kenneth, and spending evenings at Heav’nly Donuts in Bradford.
Norma is survived and will be deeply missed by her son, Lt. Richard J. Chambers of Hampstead, NH; her grandchildren, Cameron and Saige Chambers of Hampstead, NH; and her sister, Arline Roberts and her husband John of Haverhill. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Mary Jane Praiano, whose loving care and support brought much comfort to Norma in recent years.
In addition to her husband, Norma was predeceased by two brothers, Forrest Spurling, Jr., and Malcolm Spurling; and the mother of her grandchildren, Amy (Canovitch) Chambers.
Norma’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the community at Hannah Duston for their love and care, as well as to Harborside Hospice for their compassionate support during her final days.
Honoring the family’s request, services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hannah Duston Resident Activities Fund, 126 Monument St., Haverhill, MA 01832, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 320 Nevada St., #201, Newton, MA 02460.
