HAVERHILL - Merton Howard, Jr., passed away pecefully on Monday, October 14, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born to Merton Howard and Caroline Howard and attended Haverhill Public School Class of 1960. He went on to Northern Essex Community, College Associate degree in Criminal Justice. Later, he served on the Haverhill Police Department for thirty-seven years, twenty-seven of those years in the Detective Division and Police Prosecutor at Haverhill District Court.
Merton enjoyed watching the patriots, and loved his vehicles including his precious 1978 Corvette Pace car which he put in many shows, winning Best in Show on numerous occasions. When he retired, Merton enjoyed spending time at his home in Florida during the winter months.
He was known for his deep commitment to his family, which remained a central part of his life. Merton's presence will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
Merton leaves behind his wife, Patricia of sixty years, daughter Cheryl Wood and her husband Scott, daughter Melissa Howard and her long term boyfriend William Callahan, daughter Michelle Gomez and her husband Hector and son Michael Howard. He also leaves grandchildren Scott Wood, Jr., Christy Cotton, Samantha Dacey, Felicya Wilson, Anthony Wilson, Timothy Dacey, Justin Dacey, Cody Howard, Kayla Gomez, Hailey Howard, Karee Gomez, Hector Gomez, Jr. and Janessa Gomez. Also leaves several great-grandchildren, and his uncle, Edward Howard.
