Marina Beikoussis Obituary

PLAISTOW, NH – Marina E. (Milidakis) Beikoussis, 88 of Plaistow, NH, a loving wife, mother and grandmother passed away, peacefully, at her home in Plaistow, NH on Thursday, December 24.

She was born in Danako, Naxos, Greece, on September 13, 1932, and grew up in her beloved Athens, which she missed dearly. Marina was the oldest of nine children of the late Ioannis and Eirini Milidakis. Marina worked all her life from the young age of 7, grazing goats, and farming and milling wheat with her father. At age 14 she left her village of Danako for Athens where she nannied and was a maid for families in return for training as a seamstress. There she met her beloved husband Eleftherios and saved enough money that enabled her to purchase two plots of land for her dowry so they could get married. She assisted her husband in his tailor shop in downtown Athens until they immigrated to the United States with their two daughters.  In the United States, Marina worked at Robinson Thread Company in Worcester and then alongside her husband in their pizza restaurants-Wayland House of Pizza in Wayland, MA and Steve’s House of Pizza in Haverhill, MA. Marina and her beloved late husband shared 60 years of marriage which they devoted to God, their church, children and grandchildren. Marina was a prolific reader of the Bible and Religious teachings in Greek her entire life despite not finishing the third grade because her village school closed during World War II. Marina also learned to read and write English in her forties after moving to this country. In 1985 she instituted by decree the MA-NH chapter of the Orthodox Christian Enosis (OXEK) of Greece to be able to teach and spread the teachings of her faith. Marina was the stereotypical sweet Greek yiayia always making sure that everyone was well-fed and loved.

Marina is adored and survived by her children; Eirini Beikoussis of Haverhill, MA; Bess Beikoussis Gorman and her husband David of Andover, MA, three loving grandchildren who she loved more than life itself; Aleksey Gorman of Charleston, South Carolina, Alexander Gorman of Andover, MA, and Olga Maria Gorman of Andover, MA, her first cousin Dimitri Drimalitis, his wife Anna and son Vasili of Queens, New York, and in Greece by two sisters Katerina and Evangelia and one brother Giorgo and many  cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers and one sister.

Due to restrictions, a private family funeral service was held in Holy Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, Haverhill and burial followed in Linwood Cemetery where Marina was laid to rest next to her husband. Those wishing to honor Marina’s memory can make a contribution to Holy Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154 Winter Street, Haverhill, MA 01830.
