Margaret 'Maggy' Nelson Obituary

HAVERHILL - It’s with great sadness that we announce the death of our mum Margaret ‘Maggy’ (Slavin) Nelson, 70, of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Maggy was surrounded by her loving family as she passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025, after a year long, courageous battle with leukemia.

Maggy was  born on September 24, 1954 in Glasgow, Scotland. After moving from Scotland to America in the 1990's, Maggy worked for Mr. Mikes restaurant for several years before moving onto the 99 restaurant in Haverhill where she stayed for 27 years. Maggy  made many great lifelong friends throughout her years in the service industry. After her retirement from the 99 Maggy enjoyed working at her daughter’s restaurant Elm Square Oyster Co., Andover where she quickly became a favorite amongst the regulars and was known as “the big boss”!  Maggy took great pride in her three children as well as grandchildren. She loved hosting Sunday dinners at her house and enjoyed her son Brian’s many visits from Scotland throughout the years which often involved fun nights partying into the wee hours of the morning. Maggy loved her Scottish roots and always looked forward to trips back to her homeland to reconnect with family and savor her favorite Scottish traditions like traditional Scottish dishes. Her favorites were steak pie and sausage rolls that she made every holiday! Maggy also enjoyed many Harley adventures with her partner Skip. Maggy was a great friend to many and was always the life of the party. She enjoyed her social gatherings with friends and loved ones getting dressed up and to go out to eat at the very best restaurants. In addition to being a loving mother and grandmother, Maggy will also be remembered for her huge heart and generosity. She frequently donated her time and money  to causes she cared about. It made her happy to see others happy and she would often pick up the tab on a night out as long as everyone was having a great time.

Maggy is survived by her three children, Roseann Kennedy Williams and her husband Eric of Haverhill, MA, John Kennedy and his wife Katrina of Haverhill, MA, Brian Kennedy, and his partner, Yvonne Devlin of Glasgow, Scotland, her partner Donald ‘Skip’ Roberts of Haverhill, MA and her grandchildren, Danielle Hewitt and Giulianna Kennedy.

The family would gratefully like to thank Dr. Michelle Lee along with the staff at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Danvers as well as Care Dimension’s for the exceptional care they gave Maggy over the last year.
