BOXFORD - Kathleen (Kay) Martin, 94, died peacefully on May 12, 2021 at Port Healthcare in Newburyport surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Raymond (Ray) Martin of Boxford. Kathleen was born May 8, 1927, to Michael and Katherine Lyons in Lynn, MA. Kathleen was the oldest of the three Lyons children. Kathleen and her siblings were shown their devotion to the Catholic faith from an early age and every Sunday the family would walk to St. Joseph’s Church for mass.
Growing up Kathleen and her siblings spent a lot of time with their friends and family. As a young woman some of her favorite activities were jitterbug dancing, tennis, and going to the movies. She often told amusing stories about her first job in high school working at Laubners Bakery for thirty-seven and a half cents per hour.
In 1944, at the age of 16, Kathleen graduated from Lynn English High School and went on to attend college at The Modern School of Design and Fashion in Boston. She graduated in 1946 and entered the workforce at Jordan Marsh where she taught sewing. A few years later, she left to work for Pricilla’s of Boston where she was a pattern designer for wedding dresses, a job and career she loved until the birth of her children.
On St. Patrick’s Day (March 17, 1949) at the age of 22, Kathleen met her future husband Raymond (Ray) Martin at a dance. A dance she almost refused to attend if her mother hadn’t convinced her the party had a surprise in store for her. On April 28, 1951 Raymond and Kathleen Martin were married at St. Joseph’s Church in Lynn. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage and raised 3 children. During her years in Boxford Kathleen loved sewing, painting, gardening and was an active member of the Boxford Village Garden Club.
In 1987 Kathleen became a grandmother to her first of four grandchildren. Kathleen and Ray adored being grandparents. Over, the years Kathleen taught her grandchildren the importance of family and shared her love for painting with them and the delight of having a dessert at any time of day.
Kathleen lived 94 years full of happy memories surrounded by her family and friends and will be deeply missed by everyone. Kathleen is survived by her three children Susan Martin of Methuen MA, Sandra McCarty and her husband Stephen of Eliot ME, David Martin and his wife Karen of Topsfield MA, grandchildren Devon Scovill and her husband Kent of Eliot ME, Tanner McCarty of Portland OR, Sarah and Jennifer Martin of Topsfield MA, and many nieces and nephews.
