John P. Greenler, known to everyone as Jack, was born on October 4, 1948, to Bill and Rita Greenler. He passed away peacefully, with his wife and sons by his side, following a courageous battle with leukemia.
One of eight children, Jack is survived by his siblings Michael and his wife Mildred, Joanne Gilbert, Janet Mierzykowski, and James. He was predeceased by his siblings Jerry, Kathleen, and Paul.
Jack valued time spent with others above all else. For many years, he spent summers at Great Moose Lake in Hartland, Maine, where fishing, boating, marble games, and jigsaw puzzles filled the days and nights. Many of the games played were made by Jack himself, who was a skilled woodworker and loved creating long-lasting pieces for friends and family to enjoy. Each November, he returned to Great Moose Lake to hunt, play cards, and laugh with a close group of friends at Nate’s Hunting Camp. It was a beloved tradition he maintained for 50 years.
Another source of great joy for Jack was playing in the Tuesday night golf league at Far Corner Golf Club in West Boxford. For 43 years, he looked forward to those spring and summer nights, and the combination of great friends and the game of golf brought him genuine happiness.
Above all, family traditions were what Jack most looked forward to, and he never missed them. Many will remember him refereeing the family football game on Thanksgiving, trying to get people to “quiet down” while calling numbers at the Yankee Swap in December, and being a “tough out” in the cribbage tournament held each August during the family camping trip. He will be deeply missed at these annual gatherings.
After graduating from Merrimack College, Jack worked at the Essex Superior Court for 39 years. Beginning as a copy clerk, he steadily advanced through the ranks and retired as First Assistant Clerk. His long career reflected his reliability, professionalism, and commitment to public service.
Jack is survived by his wife of 46 years, Susan (Hood) Greenler; his sons Neil and Kevin, and Kevin’s wife Alyssa; and his grandsons Sam and Ben, who were a source of great pride. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jack will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be warmly remembered by all who knew him.
