Helen Lund (Benischek), 96, originally of South Boston, MA, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Nevins Nursing & Rehab in Methuen early Friday, January 30th.
Born and raised in South Boston, and with many of her family members living in the Polish Triangle of Dorchester, she took pride in and celebrated her Czech heritage. She was a strong, determined woman who had a long full life that included her devotion to the rescue and care of animals, sage advice to family members, and a small circle of close friends in North Carolina where she was an active member of the senior center. She was widowed three times and spoke fondly of her marriages with her husbands, John Shank, Jim Wiliams, and Thor Lund. Keeping family connected was especially important to her and she became one of the last surviving story tellers of the Czech family. We will miss her wisdom, tenacity, love, and presence.
She is survived by her cousin Ronald Jansky of North Carolina and the late Joel Jansky of Dorchester and late Andrew Jansky of Braintree. She is also survived by several next generation cousins including Karen Jansky of West Newbury, Alisha Jansky of Cambridge, Christine Jansky of Roslindale, Mary Fennessy (Jansky) of Braintree, Donna Jansky of Hopedale, Brian Jansky of Hingham, and Allison Eaton (Jansky) of Danvers.
The family will be planning private services later in the spring with a celebration of life to follow. In lieu of flowers or gifts, it would mean a lot to Helen if donations could be made to Coastal Cats in Hull, MA in her name at www.coastalcatrescue.org
