HAVERHILL - Edward F. Clough, 76, of Haverhill, passed away Friday, November 3rd, 2023, in Naples, Florida, surrounded by family.
He was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, son of the late Forest E. and Victoria A. (Macul) Clough.
Ed served in the United States Air Force in the intelligence unit and was stationed in Germany, where he lived and traveled for 3 years. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Boston with a Bachelor of Arts in English. He was hired as a writer for the Haverhill Gazette before being promoted to City Editor, managing a team of reporters and photographers for the daily newspaper. He later went on to have a successful career in public relations and business communications, leading teams in roles such as Director and Senior Vice President at several prestigious companies before his eventual retirement.
Ed was an avid golf enthusiast and was proud to have achieved two holes-in-one. He developed many friendships while golfing at Bradford Country Club and Crystal Springs since his youth. Over the last several years, he spent winters in Naples, Florida, where he was thrilled to be living on a golf course at which he frequently played.
Ed was known for his sharp wit and inquisitive nature. He was a great skier, having crafted his skills at European ski resorts while living in Germany and spending many winters skiing with family and friends at his vacation home in North Conway, New Hampshire. He enjoyed playing poker with his brother Philip and their close friends. Going against the grain of a typical Massachusetts resident, he was a New York Yankees fan. He loved to travel and frequently visited Maui, Hawaii to spend time with his lifelong friends Bob and Jane and their daughter Jennifer Brown.
Most of all, Ed loved spending time with family, especially his loving wife of 50 years, Maryanne. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend who touched the lives of many people. In addition to his wife, his survivors include his son Adam; daughter and son-in-law Justine and Sean Sullivan; grandchildren Finn and Sophie Sullivan; brother and sister-in-law Philip and Linda; nieces Rebecca and husband Michael Fraser and Lauren and husband Ryan Fontaine; and cousin Kenneth and wife Irena Anthony, among others. He was predeceased by his sister Elaine Clough and nephew Andrew Clough. Edward also leaves many dear friends who will miss him greatly.
