Donald Talbot Obituary

HAVERHILL - Donald L. Talbot, 79, longtime Haverhill and Middleton resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 3, 2020.

Don was born in Salem, MA on October 18, 1940, son of Leo and Stacia (Iwanicki) Talbot. He was raised in Danvers and graduated from Danvers High School where he excelled in baseball.

He was a Danvers All Star Little League and High School baseball player and holds the conference highest batting average record.  Upon high school graduation in 1958 he was a bonus prospect signed by the MLB Cleveland Indians. After his release from the Indians, he was signed by the San Francisco Giants. Upon being released by the Giants, Don continued to play outstanding baseball in the Danvers historic Twi Light League, where his father Leo was a team member in the league's startup many years ago. He was involved in a blockbuster trade between the Plains and Port teams sending Don to Port team for a 3 player deal. Don also played basketball, earned his certification and was a referee for high school basketball for many years. He was inducted into the Danvers High School Athletic Hall of Fame and was very proud of his athletic accomplishments.

Don was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 40 years until his retirement in his beloved hometown of Danvers. He was a “Townie” as they say, who loved the residents and outstanding sports opportunities Danvers provided him.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Corinne (Hammond) Talbot, who passed away in March of 2020. They lived in Middleton for many years prior to moving to Brickett Hill in Haverhill in 1987. They enjoyed their life together traveling, long car rides, going out to eat and most of all each other’s company.

Surviving family members include his sister Barbara Talbot Bonney of Wildwood, FL; niece Lisa Sullivan and husband Daniel of Worcester; cousin Carol Iwanicki of Jersey City, NJ; many cousins; longtime friends John Paul and Petie Jones of Beverly, MA, Mark and Lisa Werner of Newburyport, MA as well as his many close friends at Haverhill Crossings. His family and friends would like to thank the wonderful staff at Holy Family Methuen for the excellent care he received in his final days.
