HAVERHILL - Born on February 27, 1940, and grew up in Fair Lawn, NJ, Diane Lynn Hudson (née Davis) was a beacon of intelligence, strength, and passion. She passed away on April 4, 2025, leaving behind a cherished legacy. Diane was predeceased by her loving husband, David Hudson, and her beloved daughter, Heather Hudson. She is survived by her devoted son, Leigh Hudson, daughter-in-law, Jennifer Friel, grandson, Hunter Hudson, and caring brother, Donald Davis.
Diane's early life in Fair Lawn showcased her determination and resourcefulness. One favorite story from her son Leigh highlights her practical skills and can-do attitude: Diane once patched the exhaust system of her VW Beetle with tin cans, a skill taught by her father.
Her lifelong educational journey was impressive, earning multiple degrees and certifications. Diane attended William Paterson College, majoring in English and minoring in Speech Arts, earning her B.A. and Secondary Education Certificate. She furthered her education at North Texas State University, Framingham State College, Emerson College, Bates College, and Johns Hopkins University, studying subjects like Irish Literature, Shakespeare, Technical Writing, and Speech Therapy.
Diane's career was equally remarkable. At Walpole High School in MA, she taught English to students in grades 9-12, directed twelve full-length plays and eight musicals, and produced student-directed one-act productions. She also pioneered the school's bi-weekly live news cablecast. Maureen Kunz, a colleague and friend for 40 years, remembers Diane's energy, creativity, and the joy of collaborating on curriculum. Diane's creativity made their joint efforts more worthwhile. Friends, Charolette and Floy recall that her efforts in musical theater inspired many students to develop personal interests, talents, and creativity. Patricia Jackson, a colleague and friend, had two daughters that took advantage of Diane's Drama Club and had her as a teacher. Diane ensured that everyone thought more deeply in their reading and developed their creative thinking abilities. While stoic, Diane also famously swept the stage to dispel stress before each performance.
Demonstrative of her intellect she transitioned to computer science as a professor. Diane played a key role in creating the cybersecurity curriculum at Middlesex Community College and taught various IT courses at North Shore Community College and Middlesex Community College, helping students develop essential digital skills.
Diane's personal life was marked by unwavering love and dedication to her family. She raised two children, including a daughter with spina bifida and a son who was a troublesome rebel. Despite challenges, Diane's strength and resilience shone through, making her a pillar of support for her family. Her volunteer work, including directing musicals at Medfield High School and volunteering for organizations like the Easter Seal Society and Spina Bifida Association of America, further demonstrated her commitment to helping others. Friends Floy and Charlotte remember Diane as a loving wife, devoted mother, faithful friend, and talented teacher. Pat Jackson, a close friend, shared how Diane's kindness and generosity made her a cherished friend and confidante.
Diane Lynn Hudson's legacy is one of intelligence, strength, and passion for teaching creative thinking and drama. Her transition to computer science and her key role in creating the cybersecurity curriculum will be remembered as significant contributions to the field. Diane's life was a testament to her ability to do anything, her dedication to her family, and her unwavering commitment to education and helping others. Diane gave of herself every day and she will be missed terribly.
