Curina Atwood Obituary

HAVERHILL - Curina (Harian) Atwood died peacefully at her home in Bloomfield Twp., Michigan on December 4, 2020. She was 97 years old. Curina was born on March 8, 1923 in Haverhill, Massachusetts to parents Alice V. (Arakelian) and Joseph M. Harian.

Curina grew up in Bradford, Massachusetts and graduated from Haverhill High School. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Tufts University. Curina married her high school sweetheart, Donald J. Atwood, Jr., also of Haverhill and together they had two children. Her husband’s career found them moving often and Curina established homes in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Indiana, California, Michigan and Washington, D.C., before the couple eventually settled in Franklin, Michigan. She was an active member of the Franklin Community Church, with strong church friendships that sustained her following her husband’s passing in 1994. She enjoyed travelling, golfing, skiing, bird watching, growing orchids, long walks on the beach and playing bridge with friends. Above all Curina enjoyed spending time with her family. Her greatest pride and joy were her five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and she was excited to welcome her fourth great-grandchild in the Spring. Curina was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. She was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Curina is survived by her loving children Susan A. (Christopher T. Tatu) Atwood of Ortonville, Michigan and Donald J. (Monique) Atwood, III of Potomac, Maryland; her cherished grandchildren Allison L. (Robert A. III) Nalette, Sarah E. (Samuel) Kaplunov, Cole D. Atwood, Kaylie N. Atwood and Hannah C. Tatu; is great-grandchildren Harrison A. Kaplunov, Emilia L. Kaplunov and Adeline C. Kaplunov; and many nieces and nephews. Curina was preceded in death by her beloved husband Donald J. Atwood, Jr. and her dear brother Joseph M. Harian, Jr.

The family would like to extend a special, heartfelt thank you to her loving and dedicated caregivers, Bonnie and Christine. Their care and support were truly a blessing and allowed Curina to remain happily in her home until her passing.

Private services will be held at a future date when Curina will be laid to rest next to her husband in Walnut Cemetery, Haverhill.
