GROVELAND - William R. Desmond, 83, formerly of Plum Island, recently of Groveland, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Lahey Medical Center, Burlington on Monday evening, July 8, 2013.

Mr. Desmond was born on August 11, 1929 in Greenwich, CT. Son of the late William V. and Jessie Mae (Talbot) Desmond. He was raised in Greenwich and attended Greenwich schools. He is a Veteran of the United States Navy having served during the Korean War as a radar man on the USS Chukawan. While in the service he married the love of his life, his wife, Maureen A. (Reynolds) Desmond on October 1, 1950. Enjoyed almost 63 years of marriage.

After being honorably discharged, they began to raise their family in Byram, CT while working as an electrician for RB&W in Port Chester, NY. They moved to Massachusetts in 1968 living in Methuen for period of time before moving to Plum Island, Newburyport for 27 years where Bill's heart always remained. Recently residing in Groveland for several years. Mr. Desmond was a career-long Union Electrician for the IBEW Local 103 of Boston until his retirement in 1995.

His activities included being with family; a devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He adored his nieces and nephews. An avid reader, always enjoyed the peace and quiet of reading at his home on Plum Island overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Haverhill.

His surviving family members include his wife, Maureen A. (Reynolds) Desmond of Groveland; cherished sons, Dennis Desmond Sr. of Groveland and Kevin Desmond and his wife Rosemary of Groveland; grandchildren, Dennis Desmond, Jr., Ryan Desmond and Sean Desmond; sister, Jean B. Desmond of Greenwich, CT; many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning, July 12, beginning in the Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 So. Main Street, Bradford at 9:00 AM. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. John the Baptist Church, 110 Lincoln Avenue, Haverhill at 10:00 AM. Interment with Navy Honors will follow in St. James Cemetery, Haverhill. Visiting hours will be held Thursday in the funeral home from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.
