Haverhill: Walter L. Smith, 90, passed away at his home on June 30th. Mr. Smith was the husband of the late Barbara (Mears) Smith.

Born in Haverhill on April 14, 1918, he was the son of the late Leroy J. and Eva M. (Boucher) Smith.

Mr. Smith's long work career began as a farmer on the John Greenleaf Whittier Birthplace property, before working as a smelter for W.S. Tuckwell Foundry in Merrimacport. He the worked 31 years as a machine operator at Ornsteen Wood Heel Co before his retirement in 1981.

Mr. Smith is survived by his longtime friend Leroy E. Adams and his wife Cathy of Farmington, NH.

Friends are invited to the funeral Thursday morning July 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the funeral from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
