Obituary

HAMPTON, NH: Suzanne (Woodie) McGregor Pope, February 1933 – June 10th 2025, passed away at home.  She was the daughter of George and Elizabeth McGregor of Haverhill, MA, and grew up there, raising her family until she moved to Hampton, NH, to her late father's home on the Place Cove beach.

She was the wife of David A. Pope, whom she knew as a childhood friend. They grew up with the families of Haverhill at the time, which included the Veasey, Drolet, George, Kimball, Rogers, Bixby, McGregor, Davis and Pope. David and Woodie were married for 72 wonderful years; they had five children; George Douglas Pope (wife Carla), Deborah Garand (husband David), David Gregory (wife Elizabeth, Scott MacGregor (wife Christina), and Whitney Pope (deceased 1993). Woodie leaves in her wake (10) grandchildren and (17) great-grandchildren, and she was enthralled by them all.

Woodie was a special person who possessed many talents yet remained very modest about them all. Woodie loved to laugh and enjoyed playing jokes on old friends and family during April Fool's Day, which was one of her favorite times. Memories were shaped with laughter surrounding gatherings of family and friends. She had an incredible singing voice, played classical music on the piano, and her son Creg remembers listening nightly to Chopin and Beethoven while falling asleep. Sha was an athlete who loved all sports, including tennis, skiing, and golf (until she was 85 years old). She was also a good dancer and a beautiful, talented Fly Fisherwoman. She fly-fished all over the world, from Alaska, Mongolia to Tasmania, and made the cover of North Conway Sun magazine showing a beautiful looping fly rod cast in a calm NH river. She was at peace fishing.

One of her greatest gifts was a God-given talent for architectural design and décor, which is evident in several family structures she designed and supervised during their construction. After the loss of her 28-year-old child, Whitney to a long struggle with Diabetes, she poured her heart and soul into rebuilding the family beach house for two years, overseeing every detail. Later in life, she took up sculpting and produced many exceptional pieces, including a self-portrait.

Her biggest accomplishment was raising good human beings who set the bar for generations to come. Woodie believed in kindness, thoughtfulness, and forgiveness towards others above all else; she loved being a mother and derived purpose from taking care of others. Her husband Dave, known to his grandchildren as Big D, was her best friend and partner in everything in life; they cherished each other right up to the end.

The Pope family would like to thank Deborah, Cecile, and Kimberly from Hospice, along with Jennifer P., Susan C., Jennifer F., and Jennifer T. from Aging Excellence.

The burial will be a "Private" event held at a future date for family members. Arrangements under the direction of Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main St., Haverhill, MA 01830. Messages of condolence may be sent to www.dcsfuneralhome.com.
