HAVERHILL - Sophia (Menounou) George, 78, of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Haverhill, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2012 at her residence in Las Vegas.

Sophia was born in Greece on May 9, 1934, daughter of the late Nikitas and Penelope (Karalias) Menounos. She was educated in Greece and immigrated to this country in 1955 being sponsored by the late Efstratios and Helen Ducacaros of Haverhill. She has lived in Las Vegas for the past forty years.

Sophia had a very unique way of transforming the negative things in life into the positive. She would give of herself selflessly to those in need without them even knowing that she was the one making the difference as she was a guardian angel to so many. Children and God's creatures would flock around her unconditionally by her spirit, laughter, humor, and above all her infectious smile. By Sophia's presence and her continuous and unending acts of kindness to strangers and friends alike they were enriched and blessed to have known her as their lives would be forever changed. A simple woman whose humbleness, caring and concern for all was her way of life. Above all, her love of her family and friends sustained her throughout her life as her loss will be forever remembered and cherished.

Her surviving family members include her loving daughter Maria George of Las Vegas, NV; siblings, Christina Fikis of Haverhill, Haralambos Menounos of Greece, and Anthony Menounos of Las Vegas, NV; nieces and nephew Xanthie Lazarkis of Haverhill, Penelope Orfanos of Haverhill, Joanna Nifakos of Plaistow, NH, Nikie Fikis of Haverhill, John Fikis of NJ, Penelope and Angeliki of Greece. She also leaves many great nieces and nephews of Haverhill.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday morning, July 11, in the Holy Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter Street, Haverhill at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Linwood Cemetery, Mill Street, Haverhill. Relatives and friends kindly invited to attend. Arrangements under the care of the Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 So.
