Haverhill: Ruth H. (Chamberlain) Steele, 86, died Tuesday evening at Penacook Place. Mrs. Steele was the wife of the late George H. Steele, Jr.

Born in Cambridge, MA on November 12, 1923, Mrs. Steele was the daughter of the late Lester and Hester (Crosley) Chamberlain.

Mrs. Steele was raised in Maine and graduated from South Portland High School, Class of 1941. Following her marriage she joined her husband in Haverhill and raised their family. Ruth had worked in the cafeteria at Tilton School and Haverhill High School allowing her to be at home with her children. She then joined Sears & Roebuck as an account coordinator for several years prior to retiring in 1988. Mrs. Steele was a member of Riverside Memorial Church where she taught Sunday school and participated in the Women's Guild.

Mrs. Steele is survived by her children, Susan Powell and husband Daniel, and Michael Steele, both of Haverhill; sister, Doris Mangiulli of So. Burlington, VT; sister-in-law, Helen Chamberlain of Scarborough, ME and brother-in-law, Girard Mailloux of Bradford. She was the sister of the late Harold Chamberlain and Winifred Cooper.

Friends are invited to the funeral Saturday, 10:00 a.m., at Riverside Memorial Church. Interment at Linwood Cemetery. Calling hours Friday 2:00 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 8:00 p.m. at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill.
