Obituary

MERRIMAC, MA: Nancy M. Covey (Kit) MacGregor, 82, died Thursday at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. Mrs. MacGregor was the wife of Atty. A. Bruce MacGregor. Born in Boston March 5, 1925, and raised in the Waban section of Newton, Mrs. MacGregor was the daughter of Roger and Constance Clark Covey.

Nancy was a graduate of the Northfield School for Girls, Bates College (B.A. 1947), and Boston Universitys Sargent College (M.S. 1975). In 1955 she contracted polio and for eight months lived in an iron lung at Mass General Hospital. Thereafter, she was unconfined in a wheelchair. She twice traveled to England, Scotland and Whales for three week motor tours. She enjoyed summers at her cottage on the beach in Rye, NH, and driving to and from Bokeelia, FL in the winter. Her interest was varied and included; politics, bridge, container gardening, bird watching and entertaining. Mrs. MacGregor was civic minded as evinced by her political and charitable work. She was a member of the Greater Haverhill Area Board of the Department of Mental Health, a member of the Board of Directors of the Northeast Mental Health Association, a volunteer Probation Officer at the Central District Court in Haverhill, Trustee of the Pentucket Regional Scholarship Foundation, Trustee of the Merrimac Public Library, and Chair of the Religious Education Committee of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Haverhill. In 1973 Nancy was elected to a two year term, becoming the first woman selectman of the Town of Merrimac. She was subsequently elected to two further three year terms.

Married for 56 years her family includes her son Mark C. MacGregor and his wife Sarah of Kittery, ME and daughter Susan B. MacGregor of Merrimac, MA. Friends are invited to a gathering in her honor on Saturday October 13th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Groveland Fairways. Interment at Locust Grove Cemetery will be private. Arrangements by Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill.
