Obituary

SALEM, NH - Manfred "Fred" Hartmann was born on February 1, 1930 in Schoenberg - Oberlanitz, Germany and passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. Fred was a resident of Salem, NH for the past 19 years.

The Farm Bureau sponsored Fred when he came to the United States in June 1949 at the age of 19 on an agricultural exchange program. Fred graduated with the class of 1953 at Townsend High earning his High School diploma. For several years he held various jobs in Massachusetts before starting work in 1958 at Raytheon in Lowell, MA where he tested missile guidance systems. After 34 years at Raytheon, he retired in 1992 and began working at Campbell's Scottish Highlands Golf Course in Salem, NH. He worked there for over 25 years, helping with the construction of the golf course and performing a variety of maintenance tasks. He was a talented mason and constructed the beautiful bridge on Hole #3.

Fred enjoyed traveling, golfing, scuba diving, skiing and reading. He became certified as a diver at age 63 and completed over 200 dives. His latest adventures included skydiving at age 85 and hot air ballooning at age 88.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Marjorie Powell (October 1986). He leaves two sons, Peter Hartmann, MD, FACS and his wife Karen of West Newbury, MA and Mark Hartmann and his companion Tammy of Efland, NC; and twin daughters Sherrianne Johnston and her husband Ken of Salem, NH and Marianne Campbell and her husband Ken of Port Angeles, WA. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 6 nieces, 5 nephews and his dear friend and traveling companion Brigitte Rupp of Bretten, Germany.

An informal gathering of family and friends for a Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Campbell's Scottish Highlands Golf Course, 79 Brady Ave., Salem, NH.
