Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - Maggie Stein of Springfield passed away peacefully on April 1, 2015 after a long illness.

Maggie was born on September 13, 1947, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Edwin E. Stein and Catherine L. Stein. Because of her father's career as a university professor and dean, the Stein family lived in many places, including a year in Vienna, Austria, where Maggie became fluent in German at an early age.

She graduated from Needham High School in Needham, MA. After raising four children, she received her undergraduate degree at The Elms in Chicopee, graduating with highest honors. She then earned two Master's Degrees, one in chemistry and one in rehabilitation, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in chemistry from Springfield College. Maggie studied as an insurance actuarial, working in the field of substance abuse and was employed as a chemist at Contest Analytical Lab in East Longmeadow.

Maggie was warm-hearted and generous, and she was a person of many talents. She was a loving mother and wife, classical pianist, excellent cook and enthusiastic gardener.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Robert Wingate, and they were together for twenty six years. Maggie is also survived by son Christopher Goulart, her daughter Kassandra Callahan and husband Douglas, her daughters Angela Duchemin and Amy Mouser; seven grandchildren; sisters Susan Leahy, Kathleen Stein and Ellen Stein and brother Edwin Stein.

A funeral Mass will be held for friends and family on Friday, April 17, at 11:00 AM in Holy Cross Church on Plumtree Road in Springfield. A memorial gathering to celebrate Maggie's life and accomplishments will be held later at the convenience of her family. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested in Maggie's name to Dakin Humane Society, 171 Union Street, Springfield, MA 01115.
