HAVERHILL: Lewis F. "Lew" Poore, 88, passed away suddenly on August 14, 2019 at Stewart Holy Family Hospital in Methuen.
Born in Haverhill on December 13, 1930, he was the son of the late Frank H. and Dorothy G. (Remick) Poore.
Lew was educated in Haverhill, and then followed his passion for cars working many years as a mechanic for dealerships to include Bridge Street Garage in Derry, NH. He honorably served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. As a member of the 3rd Infantry Division he served as a Sergeant First Class (T), and earned many awards to include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Korean Service Medal and three Bronze Service Stars. Lew joined the Haverhill Fire Department in November of 1957, and served twenty-eight years as a Private prior to his retirement in May of 1986.
He was a longtime member of Haverhill Elks Lodge #165, and West Parish Men's Club. For the last thirty years, Lew has enjoyed spending winters in Florida, most recently in Bradenton, FL.
Lew is survived by his children; Lewis F. "Jerry" Poore, Jr, and his companion of many years Lisa Hayden, of Hampstead, NH, Cheryl Curran of Haverhill, Darlene Sanborn and husband Kevin of Haverhill, Steven Poore and his wife Wendy of Haverhill; ten grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant twins, David and Diane, and was the brother of the late Barbara Gould and Elizabeth Carnes.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral on Tuesday, August 20th at 11:00 am at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Donations in Lew's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
