ATKINSON, NH: Evelyn B. (Jones) Sawyer, 92, a resident of Atkinson for 68 years, died peacefully at her home on February 15th. Mrs. Sawyer was the wife of the late Roger B. Sawyer.
Born in Barre, VT on January 15, 1917, Mrs. Sawyer was the daughter of the late Clayton and Barbara (Cordiner) Jones.
After completing her education in Bethel, VT she continued her studies at Holyoke School of Nursing graduating as a Registered Nurse. She had worked at the former Hale Hospital, and then devoted herself to private practice for twenty years before retiring in 1979. As the matriarch of the Sawyer family she directed the operations of the Bradford Ski Area continuously since 1956, and which continues today under the direction of her sons.
Mrs. Sawyer remained very active in her community. She was a founding member of the Atkinson Garden Club, a Life Member of National Garden Clubs, Life Member of the New Hampshire Federation of Garden Clubs and Life Member of Atkinson Historical Society.
Mrs. Sawyer is survived by her sons, Neil W. Sawyer of Bradford, Bradley C. "Brad" Sawyer and his wife Diana of Yarmouth Port, MA; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; siblings, Arthur Jones and his wife Barbara of New London, NH, Eleanor Schneider of San Carlos, CA, Earl Jones of Dunbarton, NH and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Clayton, Kenneth, Albert and Paul Jones, and Phyllis Mooney.
Friends are invited to attend calling hours this Wednesday 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Funeral service to be held on Saturday, May 9th , 10:00 a.m., at Atkinson Congregational Church followed by interment at Atkinson Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to Atkinson Historical Society, 3 Academy Ave, Atkinson, NH 03811, or Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack Street, Bldg. 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.
