HAVERHILL: Ethel L. Hamilton, 92, lifelong resident of Whittier land in Haverhill, MA, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025 at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. She was the wife of Gordon H. "spike" Hamilton who passed away in 2004.
Born in Haverhill, MA on September 29, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Eva van Slike Weeks.
Ethel graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1951, and continued her education graduating from Lawrence School of Nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her nursing career spanned many years while providing compassionate care to patients in the Haverhill area.
Ethel enjoyed visiting various churches, and for many years was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Upon retiring, she enjoyed traveling with her late husband Gordon to most of the United States and provinces of Canada, as well as parts of Europe. Her most enjoyable trips were exploring the back roads right here in New England. She was an avid reader of history, enjoyed antiquing, birdwatching, gardening, and walking along the shoreline of our New England beaches. Ethel was a member of Haverhill's Whittier Club, East Parish Meeting House, and Weeks Brick House in Greenland, NH. She found great peace in knowing "Death is not the end; it is another step in the journey of life."
Ethel was one of ten children and survived by her daughter, Diane Collins and son-in-law Chuck Collins of Haverhill, daughter-in-law, Marie Hamilton, as well as, her sister, Rosemary Tuxbury; seven grandchildren: Jeff Collins, Eric Collins and his wife Brie, Merideth Collins, Ashley Hamilton and fiancé Jason, Seth Hamilton and his wife Colleen, Josh Gilb, and Jamie Gilb, and eight great grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Glen Hamilton. Ethel's family was special to her and an enormous part of her life. She had great love for her siblings, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and life- long friends.
Arrangements under the direction of Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill, will be private with inurnment at Linwood Cemetery. Donations in Ethel's name may be made to a charity of donor's choice. On-line condolence may be sent to www.dcsfuneralhome.com
