MELBOURNE, FL: Dorothy R. (Emery) Batchelder, 85, formerly of West Newbury, passed away November 1, 2015 at Indian River Nursing Center. She was the wife of the late Erwin W. Batchelder.
Born in Merrimac, MA on August 23, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Eben and Eva (Demeritt) Emery.
Dorothy was educated in West Newbury, attended Newburyport High School, and graduated from Essex Agricultural & Technical High School (Essex Aggie). She worked twenty years as an Assembler for the former Western Electric before her retirement.
Dorothy was a member of the First Congregational Church of West Newbury. In 1978 she and her husband moved from West Newbury to Melbourne, FL where she volunteered her time at the Holmes Regional Medical Center knitting caps for newborns. She was an active participant in the American Red Cross blood drives where she was a member of the "Ten Gallon Club". Dorothy and her husband enjoyed many years of square dancing with their many friends. She was an avid gardener whose green thumb could grow almost anything.
Dorothy is survived by her children; Patricia D. Brodie of Merrimac, MA, Erwin W. Batchelder of Amesbury; grandson, Matthew Brodie and wife Nicole of Greece, NY; great grandson, Camden Brodie; siblings, Frederick Emery and wife Barbara of Chagrin Falls, OH, Gilbert Emery of Amesbury, Mildred Woodworth of Haverhill, Priscilla Lewis and husband Ted of Newburyport, Marjorie Carrico and husband Richard of Lexington, SC; several nieces and nephews; former brother-in-law, Norman Biberdorf and wife Cynthia of Melbourne, FL. Dorothy was predeceased by her great granddaughter, Madeline Brodie.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Thursday, November 12th, at 12:00 noon at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Calling hours will precede the service from 10:00 to 12:00. Interment to follow at Bridge Street Cemetery in West Newbury. Donations in Dorothy's name may be made to the American Red Cross, 139 Main Street, Cambridge, MA 02142.
