HAVERHILL: Dorothy C. "Dot" Merrill, 92, passed away on April 17, 2013 at Holy Family Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Plaistow, NH on September 15, 19 20, Ms Merrill was the daughter of the late Harry and Florence C. (Hutt) Merrill.
Dorothy was educated in Haverhill and attended the Central 9th School, the former Haverhill Annex. Much of her early life was devoted to caring for her younger siblings after, sadly, her mother passed away. Dot was a hard worker. She began her career at Bixby Box Toe in Haverhill followed by CBS Hytron in Newburyport. She later joined Western Electric where she worked twenty years before retiring in 1981 as a visual mechanical inspector.
Dorothy was a member of the former Winter Street Baptist Church, First Baptist Church and Telephone Pioneers of America, Merrimack Valley Chapter 78. Some of the happiest times in her life were spent traveling throughout New England and into Canada with her longtime "soul mate" Henry A. Frechette.
She is survived by her brothers, Harry Merrill, Jr. of Haverhill, and Richard Lancaster of Brownington, VT. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Mary Jane Miller-Markins of Salem,, NH and Janis Merrill Taylor of Haverhill. She was predeceased by her companion Henry A. Frechette, brothers, Robert C. Merrill, Earl C. Merrill and his wife Jeanette, and sisters, Mary E. Miller and Shirley Ann Malcolm.
Dorothy lived at the Halcyon House in Methuen for the last few years where she had many friends. She loved to make people laugh. Dorothy was well known for her witty humor, funny expressions and gravelly voice. This tough ol' Yankee gal will be sorely missed!
Friends are invited to attend a graveside memorial service on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements by Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill.
