LANCASTER - Doris R. Whitten passed away on November 15 at the Concord Health Care Center, Concord, MA.
She was born in Geneva, New York on December 27th, 1931 to Homer & Ruth (Sheridan) Burritt. Doris was one of four siblings and the youngest of three sisters. Her father operated one of the largest farms in New York State. As a girl, Doris rode horses bareback through the family pastures and twirled a baton as drum majorette for her high school band.
In 1950, she married Adrian C. Whitten of Corning, NY. The couple had five children and lived during the 1950's in Seneca Falls. In 1961, the Whittens moved to Massachusetts, first to Sudbury, and then, in 1965, to 55 Warren Avenue in Harvard where all five children attended Bromfield High School and where Doris and Adrian remained until fire destroyed their home in 2004. The couple then relocated to Lancaster. Doris worked for 25 years at GenRad in Concord and was a statistical analyst before retiring in the1980's. She was also an accomplished ceramicist.
She is predeceased by her husband, Adrian, and is survived by her son Michael and daughter-in-law Meredith (Herndon) Whitten, sons Henry, and Jeremiah, daughters Melissa and Patience, and by grandson Justin.
Her remains will be interred with her husband's at Bellevue Cemetery in Still River in a private ceremony.
