David C.
Dyer
May 7, 1949 – November 13, 2023
HAVERHILL: David C. Dyer, 74, passed away November 13, 2023 after two years of various health issues following brain surgery. Earlier this year he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife, Deborah L. Dyer.
Born in White Plains, NY on May 7, 1949, he was the son of the late Benjamin W. Dyer, Jr., and Deborah (Stritzinger) Dyer.
David grew up in NJ, graduated from Morristown Beard School in 1967, obtained a B.A. from Beloit College (WI), and a master's in history from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Dave's career as a sportswriter spanned 49 years, beginning in Illinois, and ending at The Eagle Tribune. Over the years he won many awards, including three-time Wrestling USA Magazine's "Writer of the Year" for his high school wrestling coverage. But he was also noted for covering "less-respected" sports like cross country and softball, always looking out for all athletes, male or female, and not just the standard popular stars in football, basketball, and baseball. His passion for sports extended beyond writing. He coached youth sports at the YMCA and Boys and Girls Club, and served as a regional umpire director, umpiring hundreds of games at all youth and adult levels. Dave was also an avid hiker, oftentimes taking trips with various friends and family members. Dave was a dedicated runner and fitness enthusiast, completing over thirty marathons nationally and internationally. He loved to travel, explore new places, and meet new people. Dave and his wife hosted dozens of international exchange students over the years and served as a foster parent to several young children.
Dave is survived by his spouse and four children; Sarah Thayer and husband Peter (VT), Seth Dyer and wife Apryl (NY), Nate Dyer (Boston), and Nico Dyer (Haverhill); granddaughters, Hazel Nelson and Benner Dyer; siblings, Benjamin Dyer and wife Susan (AZ), Robert Dyer and wife Elizabeth (NC), Deborah Donnelly and husband Vincent (VT); and many beloved nieces and nephews, extended family, and exchange students.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 1pm on Saturday, November 18th at First Baptist Church, 217 Main St., Haverhill. Calling hours at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill, will be Friday from 4 to 7pm.
Memorial donations in David's name may be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill, 55 Emerson St., Haverhill, MA 01830. Messages of condolence may be sent to www.dcsfuneralhome.com.
