Col. Lawrence
J. Ewing, Jr., Usmc(Ret)
June 6, 1923 – October 10, 2006
KINGSTON, NH: Lawrence J. Ewing, Jr., Colonel USMC(RET), 83, formerly of Haverhill, died Tuesday evening at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Alice F. (Clayton) Ewing who died in August.
Born in Haverhill June 6, 1923, Col. Ewing was the son of the late Lawrence J. and J. Catherine (MacKenzie) Ewing.
He was educated in Haverhill graduating from Haverhill High School class of 1941, Tilton School class of 1942, and continued his education attendnig Boston University Evening College of Commerce. Col. Ewing completed 32 years of service in the organized Marine Corps Reserve. During the war he served as a fighter pilot receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross in the Battle of Okinawa. During the Korean Conflict he again was called to duty and served as a helicopter pilot receiving a Gold Star in lieu of his second Distinguished Flying Cross. For his military service he was awarded the Air Medal on six occassions. Col. Ewing personified the saying "Once a Marine, Always a Marine".
He was president of the shoe pattern maker business Lawrence J. Ewing, Inc. Through this business he had served as president of both the National Shoe Pattern Manufacturers Assoc., and New England Pattern Manufacturers Assoc.
In civilian life he stepped forward to take an active role in his community. He served as Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, member of the Prudential Committee, and Trustee of the First Baptist Church in Haverhill. Following his move to Kingston he joined the Newton Junction Baptist Church where he served as Trustee. Col. Ewing served as president of Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, president of Haverhill Rotary Club where he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow, director and vice-president of Greater Haverhill Foundation,first president of Historic Haverhill, director and trustee of the Haverhill YMCA, assistant scout master Troop #2, Explorer Advisor of E2 Troop, member of the Advisory Committee of Lone Tree Council, on the advisory Board of the Female Benevolent Society, director of Haverhill Community Chest & United Fund, Trustee and Investment Committee Member of the former Haverhill Saving Bank, Director and Executive Board Memebr of the former Family Bank, and member of the Haverhill Monday Evening Club.
Col. Ewing is survived by his children, Robert Ewing and his wife Ester of Kingston, NH, twin sons, Douglas Ewing and his wife Andrea of Weare, NH and Mark Ewing of Newton, NH, daughter, Catherine "Cathy" Mannheimer and her husband Marc of Bradford; step-grandchildren, Courtney, Chelsea and Max Jenkins of NH and VT, Jed Mannheimer of Brookline, MA; sister, Nancy Burke of Colchester, VT; sister-in-law Evelyn Ewing of Plaistow, NH, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Malcolm Ewing.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours Friday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill, and a memorial service 11:00 Saturday Oct. 21st at Newton Junction Baptist Church.
Interment at Linwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Newton Junction Baptist Church, P.O. Box 206, Newton Junction, NH 03859, or Beacon Hospice, 350 Main Streetm, Haverhill, MA 01830.
