Obituary

GROVELAND: Charles W. Steele, 90, former Mayor of Saugerties, NY, died peacefully at his daughter's home on October 2, 2009. He was the husband of the late Inez M. (Webber) Steele.

Born in New York City on October 8, 1918, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Jeanne (Kuszner) Steele.

Mr. Steele had worker 29 years as Personal Manager at Rotron in Woodstock, NY before retiring in 1979. He had served as Trustee of Saugerties for eight years, and Mayor from 1979 to 1983. In 2005 he relocated to Groveland to be with his daughter. During the war he served as a radio operator in the U.S. Army with Hq. Company of the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. His battle campaigns included Algerian-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicilian, Normandy, Ardennes and Rhineland. His many decorations and citations include European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with six Battle Stars, one invasion arrowhead, Purple Heart received in Germany, and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Mr. Steele's family includes his daughter, Inez Steele of Groveland, MA; sons, Charles T. Steele and his wife Donna of Saugerties, NY, Mark E. Steele and his wife Ruth of Salem, MA; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Georgette Steele, Yvonne Steele and Odette Komroff.

Arrangements by Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill, with services to be conducted in Saugerties, NY. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to Beacon Hospice, 350 Main Street, Haverhill, MA 01830.
