Charles P.
Jardine
April 8, 1925 – April 11, 2017
HAVERHILL: Charles P. Jardine passed away on April 11, 2017, three days following his 92 birthday, at Merrimack Valley Hospice House. He was the husband of Ruth N. (George) Jardine who passed away on April 17, 2017 also at Merrimack Valley Hospice House. The couple were married for sixty-nine years.
Born in Haverhill on April 8, 1925, he was the son of the late Harry and Ida "Jane" (Travis) Jardine.
Charlie was educated in Haverhill, and worked as a pipefitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years. He then accepted a position as custodian for the Haverhill Public School Department where he worked 35 years at the Peabody, Nettle and Haverhill Trade School before retiring in 1983.
He was an active and dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church serving as Elder, Trustee, and as custodian for 64 years. For many years his family enjoyed camping at Old Orchard, ME. Charlie was known for his sense of humor which he was quick to share with his friends when gathered at Heavenly Donuts.
Charlie spent many summers volunteering at the Presbyterian Church camp, Camp Wilmot, which held a special place in his heart. He served in many roles there, including cabin counselor, painting and repairing the many structures on the property, preparing meals, leading prayers on Vesper Hill, and even helping a homesick camper who needed his gentle guidance. He was a small engine repair person, and would always fix what was broken, wherever he was. His friends and family relied on him to help in many roles, and it was always with an eager heart.
He was a devout church goer, and knew many, many hymns, and could quote the Bible with astounding accuracy. At the Hospice House, he sang to the hymns played by the house choir group just days before he passed. He was the family historian and loved to share a story of the past including the year, who was present and where.
Charlie is survived by his son, Jeffery Jardine of Haverhill; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother, Warren Jardine of Haverhill; sister, Gwyneth Hannon of Haverhill, and several nieces and nephews.
Family members would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the staff of Merrimack Valley Hospice House for the warm and loving care extended to both Charlie and Ruth during their time with them.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a double memorial service on Sunday, April 30th, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. The private interment will occur at a later date. Donations in Charlie and Ruth's name may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 346 Broadway, Haverhill, MA 01832. Arrangements under the direction of Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill.
