Obituary

HAVERHILL: Ann E. "Betty" Walker, 78, a lifelong resident of Haverhill, died Thursday at The Oxford surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Walker was the wife of retired police officer Bertram R. Walker.

Born in Haverhill December 19, 1927, Mrs. Walker was the daughter of the late Ewan W. and Isabel K. (Gray) Glass. She was a graduate of Haverhill High School class of 1945, and continued her education graduating from McIntosh Business School in Haverhill.

Mrs. Walker had first worked for United Shoe in Haverhill. For many years, prior to 2002, she had been a faithful volunteer for the American Red Cross of Merrimack Valley. As a lifetime member of Trinity Episcopal Church she was fully involved in the church's ministry. She served as Sunday School teacher, member of the choir, president of St. Margaret's Guild, head of the Altar Guild, a Vestry member, Senior Warden, Eucharistic Minister, and in 1985 was acknowledged by the church as Woman of the Year. Mrs. Walker served her community as a member of the P.T.A., past treasurer of the Boy's Club Auxiliary, past treasurer of the Band Parents Association at Haverhill High School, had been a Cub and Brownie Leader at the White Church, a member of the Women's City Club of Haverhill, and Hale Hospital Auxiliary. She had been an anonymous benefactor to many in the local community. In her leisure time she enjoyed knitting and was a avid reader. Besides her husband of 55 years she is survived by her children, Robert R. Walker and his wife Jean of Haverhill, Elizabeth A. McCarthy and her husband James of Kensington, NH, Thomas G. Walker of Haverhill; grandchildren,Jennifer & Heather Walker, Scott & Colleen McCArthy, Megan, Valerie and Jeffrey Walker, and great granddaughter Ava. She was preceded in death by her children Sandra and Scott Walker.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass Monday 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery. Calling hours Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
