Obituary

HAVERHILL - Alice M. (O'Toole) Chase, 88, longtime Haverhill resident, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family following a lengthy journey with Alzheimer's on Tuesday morning, March 12, 2013 at the Mary Immaculate Nursing Center, Lawrence.

Mrs. Chase was born in Woburn on March 31, 1924. She was the third of six children of William H. and Katherine (English) O'Toole. Raised in Stoneham and graduate of St. Patrick High School, Stoneham.

Loving and supportive spouse of the late, Paul I. Chase, former Mayor of the City of Haverhill, who passed in 2003 after sharing 57 years of marriage. Moving to Haverhill in 1946, they began to raise their large family. Her activities included, volunteering with the Winnekenni Foundation serving as treasurer, and the Catholic Daughters of America. Mrs. Chase was proud to serve as a Polling Clerk during many elections at the John Greenleaf Whittier School. Longtime member of St. James Parish, Haverhill, and parishioner for years of St. John the Baptist Church in the Riverside section of Haverhill. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to many places, but the time spent at their home in Center Barnstead, NH will always hold a special place in her heart. Fondly referred to as the "Chalet".

The family would to like thank the staff of the following facilities for the loving care they have shown Mrs. Chase over the years, the Elizabeth Calsey House of Amesbury, Hannah Duston Healthcare Center, Haverhill, and the Alzheimer's Unit of the Mary Immaculate Nursing Center, Lawrence.

Her surviving family members include her cherished children, Karen Chernesky and her husband Edward of Haverhill, Kevin Chase and his wife Carole McCarey of Cotuit, Mary Carrington and her husband Bill of Bradford, Jackson Chase of Hurst, TX, William Chase and his wife Sheila of Methuen, Joanne Donnell of Cotuit, Daniel Chase and his wife Judy of Center Barnstead, NH, and Judy Deveau and her husband Ed of Haverhill; nineteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Sweeney of Stoneham; in-laws, Marjorie O'Melia, Arlene O'Toole, Lois Knight, and Elsie Chase; numerous nieces and nephews; mother of the late Paula Guertin who passed in 2006; sister of the late, Katherine Doherty, Sarge O'Toole, Lawrence O'Toole, and Francis O'Toole.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, March 16, beginning in the Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 So. Main Street, Bradford at 9:00 AM. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. John the Baptist Church, 110 Lincoln Avenue, Haverhill at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in St. James Cemetery, Primrose Street, Haverhill. Visiting hours will be held Friday in the Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 So. Main Street (Rte. 125), Bradford, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
